painting process Written on September 16, 2009, by john.
Here’s a painting I did recently, inspired by Italo Calvino’s short story The Adventure of a Nearsighted Man. Calvino is a great author to inspire paintings; his stories are very rich and vivid, and yet he never gets bogged down in detail.
The first thumbnail below is my initial sketch, and the next one is the layer of acrylics I put down to begin. To paint the sky, I cut a mask out of cardstock and carefully rubbed the color on with a paper towel.
The rest was drawn on with greyscale markers and india ink.
